What is a Domain?
Your internet name
www.yourname.com is called a domain. Only the yourname.com part is your
domain name. There are .COM .NET and .ORG names. There are a lot of new
ones coming on the market as well. But .COM and .NET are the most popular.
With .COM being the most well known; fact is people will type .COM from
habit when the domain they are looking for is a .NET or .ORG etc.
Get a .COM if you can.
Your domain name is the web address of your internet site and you can host your email through
your domain name too.
What's in a Name?
Similar names. Looking for a
domain name today you will find that the simplest (often the best) ones
are all taken. Your name must be unique, and it is best that your name
should be more unique than alike your competitions name. If you choose a
name that is to similar to others in your business you run the risk of
loosing customers to typos and people mis-remembing your domain name.
Your better
off getting a name that is totally off the description of your product or
service but that is easy to remember. Famous examples are: Ebay, DiTech,
Monster, and Yahoo! what do these domain names have to do with what they do?
Yet they seem to work.
Registering a Domain
When you register a domain
you simple pay a fee to buy the use of that name. Time was when there was
only one place to register for a domain. The standard fee was $35 a year
and you had to buy two years to get started. Now there are a lot of places
you can register your domain name and the cost has gone down a lot. The
new places are easier to deal with and a domain name is a domain name is a
domain name.
Transferring a Domain
There are two things here.
Some people might think transfer is to move from one web hosting service
to another. This is not the case. Transfer in this case is to change the
registrar who holds your domain name. The biggest reason to do this is to
go from paying $35 per year to less than $10 a year for the ownership of your
domain.
IMPORTANT!
When you transfer your domain you must have control of the email address
listed in the "who is" record under administrator. You must not try
to transfer your domain in the few weeks leading up to expiration of your
registration time. Your current registrar will put a FREEZE on your domain
and you will have to renew with them before you can move your domain to
another registrar. Please note that most registrars will allow you to
renew for only one year, most don't tell you that they just say "two years
is $70", why pay that? $10 and less per year is the going rate.
DNS
Domain Name Servers, your
registrar keeps some basic information about your domain name. Mostly who
owns it and where it is being used. The information about where it is
being used is the DNS information. This is the key to moving using your
domain name in connection with your web site. If you want to use your
domain name with EZWAYWEB you would set your DNS information to read:
DNS1.EZWAYWEB.COM and
DNS2.EZWAYWEB.COM
